MULTAN: Police have detained former National Assembly member (MNA) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar in Multan after he remained underground for a long period.
The police sources said former Punjab governor Muhammad Azhar’s son, Hammad Azhar, was arrested in Multan and later handed over to Lahore Police.
Police said Hammad Azhar was wanted in several cases linked to the May 9, 2023, violence. They said he had been declared a proclaimed offender in connection with the cases since May 9, 2023.
The latest development follows reports that Hammad Azhar had returned home in July 2025 following the death of his father, former federal minister Mian Muhammad Azhar, after spending about two years in hiding.
Sources told that Azhar had gone into hiding to avoid arrest after police raided his home two days earlier.
Five days earlier, sources said that Azhar was considering voluntarily appearing before a court and filing a bail petition. According to sources, he had held consultations with close associates and his legal team about appearing before the court.
The sources said that if bail was refused after his expected appearance, Azhar was prepared to face arrest and imprisonment.
His brief return and subsequent disappearance had sparked renewed speculation in political circles. His detention in Multan now brings his long period of evading arrest to an end, according to police sources.
