KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has directed the constitution of a judicial commission to investigate the death of Mir Raza, which will be headed by Sindh High Court Justice Umar Sial and will examine the circumstances surrounding the case.
Sharing the government’s decision with the media at a press conference at Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s head office on Monday, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab assured the bereaved family that all state institutions would extend full cooperation to the inquiry. The findings of the commission would help establish the facts and determine responsibility.
He expressed solidarity with Mir Raza’s family and reassured that whoever was found responsible for the incident would have to face the law.
“I understand the pain of parents who lose a child,” Wahab said, adding that the government’s priority was to uncover the truth and ensure justice rather than allow allegations and speculation to determine the outcome.
The Mayor said the incident occurred on July 28 and came to light the following day. An initial investigation team headed by an Additional Inspector General and a senior superintendent of police was formed, but after an MLO report was submitted, the police inquiry was subsequently restructured.
A new investigation team was constituted on Aug. 9 under the supervision of the DIG CIA, he said, adding that conflicting medical reports had emerged and the police investigation was continuing.
He said the proposal for a judicial commission had been discussed with Mir Raza’s parents, who had expressed concern that the incident was being portrayed as suicide. The family later asked that the proposed judicial inquiry be deferred after expressing confidence in the new police investigation team.
The matter was revisited after Mir Raza’s lawyer submitted a 22-page letter to the Sindh Chief Minister on Aug. 19, alleging that the police investigation had failed to resolve the case and seeking justice for the family.
The Chief Minister subsequently convened a meeting with the Inspector General of Police and Chief Secretary and sought detailed explanations from the relevant authorities. Following the meeting, he decided that a judicial commission should be constituted to ensure that the family’s concerns were addressed.
The Mayor said the provincial government had written to the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court regarding the commission and would provide every possible assistance to it.
He said Mir Raza’s mobile phone, smartwatch, SIM and other relevant items had been sent to the Punjab Forensic Science Agency at the family’s request, with the forensic report awaited. The government had also approached Apple and Meta to obtain relevant digital information, he added.
“All government institutions, including the police, will fully cooperate with the judicial commission.” The investigation would continue alongside the judicial process, he said.
The Mayor said Mir Raza’s parents, sister and fiancée were enduring profound grief, and stressed that any negligence or lapse by anyone involved in the case must be brought to light.
“Mir Raza’s mother wants only one thing — justice,” he said.
