KARACHI: China has donated 110 fogging machines worth Rs 17 million to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to support the city’s efforts to prevent the spread of infectious diseases during the rainy season.

The equipment was formally handed over to Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab by Feng Deheng, Acting Chinese Consul General in Karachi, at a ceremony held at the Chinese Consulate General in Karachi.

Speaking on this occasion, Feng Deheng said the donation was motivated by the rising risk of infectious diseases during Karachi’s rainy season and China’s desire to contribute to the wellbeing of local communities.

He said the equipment had been specifically provided for environmental disinfection and epidemic prevention during the rainy season, describing the initiative as a reflection of the “ironclad friendship” between Pakistan and China.

“We always attach great importance to the livelihood of local people and want these donations to express our care and concern for them,” he said.

Feng Dong said China hoped to undertake more initiatives in the future to contribute to local development and public welfare, stressing that the friendship between the two countries was “time-tested and deep-rooted in the hearts of the people.

Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the donation came as Pakistan and China were celebrating the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

He said the Chinese consul general had expressed a desire to support KMC in connection with Karachi’s infrastructure, which led to the idea of providing fogging machines to strengthen the city’s efforts to maintain hygiene and protect public health.

“Today, they have handed over this equipment to us and, God willing, it will make it easier for us to serve the people and address their problems,” Wahab said.

He said cooperation was continuing at multiple levels between Pakistan and China, Sindh and China, and Karachi and China, with Chinese companies investing and operating in various sectors of Karachi.
