Climate change is no longer a distant threat that belongs to scientific reports or international conferences. It has become an everyday reality, affecting the way people live, work and plan their lives.
From unusually hot summers and erratic rainfall to devastating floods and prolonged droughts, the effects of a changing climate are increasingly visible across the world. Pakistan, despite contributing relatively little to global greenhouse-gas emissions, remains among the countries highly vulnerable to the consequences of climate change.
Perhaps the most noticeable impact is the rise in extreme temperatures. Heatwaves can make ordinary activities difficult and dangerous, particularly for children, elderly people, outdoor workers and those living in poorly ventilated homes. Prolonged heat also increases demand for electricity as households turn to air conditioners and fans for relief. This places additional pressure on already strained power systems and increases household expenditure.
Water is another area where climate change is increasingly affecting daily life. Climate change has made it clear that environmental policy is no longer separate from everyday life. It affects the food people eat, the water they drink, the electricity they consume and the safety of their homes. The challenge is enormous, but timely action can reduce the damage and make communities more resilient to the changing climate.
