LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab, in a fact sheet released on Friday, said that 53 people have lost their lives and 322 others have sustained injuries due to various accidents during the monsoon rains this year.
The Authority said the best possible medical assistance is being provided to citizens injured in rain-related and other accidents on the instructions of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
DG PDMA Saif Anwar Jappa said that the protection of the lives and property of citizens and the provision of timely assistance to victims are the top priorities. Under the policy of the Punjab government, the losses suffered by families affected by rains and floods will be compensated.
According to PDMA Punjab, monsoon rains have been recorded in most districts of Punjab during the last 24 hours. Some 65 mm was recorded at Mohammadi Chowk in Rawalpindi, 64 mm in Khushab and Gujranwala, 58 mm in Joharabad, 57 mm in Sargodha, while 33 mm was recorded in Chiniot. Similarly, 29 mm of rain was recorded in Narowal, 20 mm in Mandi Bahauddin, 18 mm in Okara, 15 mm in Sheikhupura, 12 mm in Hafizabad and 10 mm in Faisalabad.
Despite the record rainfall, drainage was ensured in the shortest possible time under the leadership of the Chief Minister of Punjab. Due to advance arrangements and the availability of necessary machinery, immediate drainage of rainwater was made possible.
According to DG PDMA Muhammad Saif Anwar Jappa, continuous monitoring of rivers, dams and barrages is being carried out across the province on the instructions of the Chief Minister of Punjab. The situation is being monitored 24 hours a day in the PDMA control room.
However, the PDMA DG said there is a low flood situation in the Indus River at Kalabagh and Chashma, while the situation in other important rivers is also being continuously monitored. He said the water level in Tarbela Dam is 96 percent, while in Mangla Dam it is 61 percent. The water level in Thane Dam is 50 percent, in Pong Dam 47 percent, while in Bhakra Dam the water level is up to 43 percent.
According to PDMA Punjab, water flow is normal in most of the rivers of Punjab. The water situation in the Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej rivers is normal, while the flow of water in the rivers of Dera Ghazi Khan is also being recorded as normal. The spokesman said there is a low-level flood at Kalabagh and Chashma in the Indus River. The flow of water at Kalabagh is 346,000 cusecs, while 309,000 cusecs has been recorded at Chashma. Similarly, there is a low-level flood in Nala Basantar in Narowal district, but PDMA is continuously monitoring the situation.
DG PDMA Muhammad Saif Anwar Jappa appealed to citizens to take precautionary measures in view of the current weather and flood situation and avoid unnecessarily going near rivers, canals and rainwater channels, as well as travelling on waterlogged roads or going out for sightseeing.
