KARACHI: Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi and Higher Education Commission’s Chairman Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Akhtar on Tuesday agreed to strengthen collaboration in higher education, research and emerging technologies, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence, digital learning and innovation.
During a meeting at the Governor’s House here, the two sides discussed measures to improve the quality of higher education, align academic programmes with evolving technological needs and strengthen links between universities, industry and government.
Hashmi said quality higher education and research were critical to Pakistan’s long-term economic and social development.
He stressed the need to equip students with globally competitive skills by integrating artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and other emerging technologies into university curricula.
He also underscored the importance of expanding digital learning, promoting innovation and creating greater opportunities for young people to contribute to a knowledge-based economy.
Akhtar briefed the governor on the HEC’s ongoing reforms to enhance academic standards, strengthen research capacity and modernise higher education institutions.
He said the commission was prioritising closer collaboration between universities and industry to accelerate the commercialisation of research, foster startup ecosystems and expand incubation centres.
The meeting also reviewed initiatives aimed at improving research funding, encouraging innovation and preparing graduates for the changing demands of the global job market.
Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation between the federal government, the HEC and universities to strengthen Pakistan’s higher education system and create world-class educational, research and innovation opportunities for young people.
