LAHORE: Punjab’s Secretary for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, Dr Kiran Khurshid, said on Tuesday that price control magistrates conducted more than 88,000 inspections across the province during the past week, resulting in fines exceeding Rs5.566 million.
According to the secretary, the provincial government is maintaining a zero-tolerance policy against overpricing, profiteering, hoarding, and food adulteration, adding that no leniency will be shown in such violations.
Dr Khurshid said the crackdown against profiteers has been intensified. During the past week, 433 people were arrested. Authorities also took action against vendors selling bread at inflated prices, leading to the arrest of 138 people, registration of 25 cases, and fines exceeding Rs1 million.
She further said that 72 cases were registered during the week for failing to display official price lists and for overcharging customers. In addition, 38 shops and markets were sealed for various legal violations, while 55 people were arrested.
Dr Khurshid said the Food Safety and Consumer Protection Department is working to ensure the supply of adulteration-free and quality food to the public, to provide safe and affordable food.
She added that these enforcement measures are intended to ensure compliance with the law and provide genuine relief to citizens by improving access to quality goods at reasonable prices.
