LONDON: Cocoa futures rose sharply on Monday boosted by expectations that production in West Africa should fall in the upcoming 2026/27 season, while sugar prices were also higher.

COCOA: ICE London cocoa rose 6.4 percent to £4,269 a metric ton by 1346 GMT.

Dealers said the market continued to keep a close watch on crop development in both Ivory Coast and Ghana.

More sunny weather is needed across most of Ivory Coast’s cocoa-growing regions to support the September-to-February main crop, farmers said on Monday, after below-average rainfall and a cooling spell last week.

New York cocoa gained 6.95 percent to USD5,772 a ton.

Cocoa arrivals at ports in top grower Ivory Coast since the start of the season on October 1 have reached 1.988 million metric tons by August 2, up 21.8 percent from the same period last season, exporters estimated on Monday.

SUGAR: Raw sugar was up 2.1 percent at 14.98 cents per lb.

Dealers said the market was supported by hot, dry weather in several regions with the outlook for production diminishing in the European Union, India and Thailand.

The implementation of a higher ethanol blend in gasoline in Brazil, effective Saturday, could also lead to more use of cane to make the biofuel at the expense of sugar.

Speculators increased their bearish bet in futures of raw sugar on ICE US in the week to July 28, data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission showed on Friday.

White sugar rose 1.8 percent to USD470 a ton.

COFFEE: ICE arabica coffee was down 1.9 percent at USD3.2565 per lb, slipping back after rising by 6.7 percent in July.

Dealers said the market was underpinned by tight supplies driven partly by harvest delays in Brazil, noting that exchange stocks had fallen to the lowest level in more than 2-1/2 years.

Robusta coffee rose 0.7 percent to USD3,800 a ton.

Vietnam exported 1.31 million metric tons of coffee in the first seven months of 2026, up 21.1 percent from the same period a year earlier, government data showed on Monday.
