LAHORE: The Police arrested over 90 demonstrators from ‘Kashmir Solidarity’ protest arranged by the Pakistan Kissan Rabita Committee (PKRC) on Friday and later released all late in the evening.
The PKRC spokesperson confirmed that all leaders and activists arrested by the police during today’s peaceful protest have been released. Among those detained was Farooq Tariq, Federal Committee Member of the Pakistan Kissan Rabita Committee and President of the Haqooq-e-Khalq Party.
During the peaceful demonstration, police arrested more than 90 protesters. Several detainees were taken to the police station, while others were held for hours in prison vans before all were eventually released.
The Pakistan Kissan Rabita Committee strongly condemned the arrests of peaceful protesters and the use of state repression against citizens exercising their democratic rights. It said the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees every citizen the right to peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, and peaceful protest. The use of force to suppress these democratic rights is deeply concerning and unacceptable in any democratic society, said an announcement by the PKRC.
The release of all detainees was made possible through the timely intervention and collective pressure of lawyers, human rights organisations, workers’ and peasants’ movements, political activists, journalists, and thousands of individuals and organisations in Pakistan and across the world who expressed their solidarity, it said.
The Pakistan Kissan Rabita Committee extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who raised their voices against these arbitrary arrests and demanded the immediate release of those detained.
The Committee reiterates that arrests, intimidation, and state repression cannot weaken the determination of political workers, students, peasants, women, youth, and working people.
‘We call upon the government to end the criminalization of peaceful protest, respect the constitutional and democratic rights of all citizens, and hold accountable those responsible for these unlawful arrests and the excessive use of force. Arrests cannot break our resolve. Our struggle will continue, and the voice of the people cannot be silenced’, the PKRC spokesperson concluded.
