PM vows stronger economic cooperation with US

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said Pakistan wanted to further strengthen economic cooperation with the US, particularly in trade, investment, agriculture, information technology, mines and minerals, and the energy sector.

The prime minister made the remarks during a meeting with a visiting US Congressional delegation comprising Representatives Ryan Zinke and Michael Baumgartner, as Islamabad looked to expand economic engagement with Washington.

Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding partnership with the US, saying economic cooperation remained a central pillar of bilateral ties.

He invited more US companies to invest in Pakistan through mutually beneficial ventures across a range of sectors.

Highlighting the contribution of the Pakistani-American diaspora, the prime minister said the community served as an important bridge between Pakistan and the United States.

Welcoming the two members of Congress, Sharif described their visit as a positive step towards building stronger Pakistan-US relations.

He congratulated the US Congress and the American people on the 250th anniversary of US independence and conveyed his warm regards and best wishes to President Donald Trump.

The prime minister also recalled President Trump’s intervention that led to a cessation of hostilities and a ceasefire between Pakistan and India in May 2025, saying it helped prevent further loss of life.

The visiting members of Congress thanked the prime minister for the hospitality extended to them during their visit.

They noted that President Trump had enjoyed strong relations with Pakistan’s leadership and said these ties were having a positive impact on bilateral relations.

They also praised Pakistan’s role in regional peace efforts.

The two sides agreed to increase the frequency of visits by Congressional delegations to Pakistan as well as parliamentary delegations to the US.

Later, Prime Minister Sharif hosted a reception in honour of a delegation of US corporate executives visiting Pakistan.

The delegation included representatives from the information technology, energy, mining and manufacturing sectors.

The reception was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch, US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker, federal ministers and senior government officials.
