KARACHI: The Pakistani rupee continued its marginal gain against the US dollar for another week, appreciating 0.03 percent in the inter-bank market.

The local unit closed at 277.96 against the greenback, a gain of Re0.09 from 278.05 it had closed at a week earlier. The rupee strengthened past Rs278 against the dollar after around 19 months.

Pakistan’s current account recorded deficit of USD 139 million in FY26, reversing a surplus of USD 1.84 billion in the previous fiscal year, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). Despite record workers’ remittances, the country’s external account was pushed into negative due to high imports, while exports remained largely stagnant during FY26.

Pakistan repaid more than Rs4.7 trillion of public debt before maturity through a series of buyback operations, marking the country’s largest-ever proactive liability management exercise, Finance Minister’s advisor Khurram Schehzad said during the previous week.

Meanwhile, SBP’s foreign exchange reserves fell by USD 1.245 billion to USD 17.226 billion during the week ended July 10, 2026, mainly due to external debt repayments.
