Rain, windstorms likely in upper, central Pakistan until July 8: PMD

  • Warns rainfall may cause urban flooding in Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar
Published Updated

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday forecast widespread rain, windstorms and thunderstorms across the upper and central parts of the country over the next two days, warning of isolated heavy downpours that could trigger urban flooding, landslides and flash floods in vulnerable areas.

Moist currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, coupled with an approaching westerly wave, are expected to bring intermittent rainfall to parts of Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and northeastern Balochistan through July 8, while isolated showers are also likely in parts of Sindh.

The Met Office warned that heavy rainfall could cause localised urban flooding in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Nowshera, Gujranwala, Lahore and Faisalabad, while landslides and increased water flows in streams and hill torrents are possible in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and parts of Dera Ghazi Khan.

The PMD also cautioned that strong winds and lightning may damage vulnerable infrastructure, including solar panels, electricity poles and billboards, and advised tourists, travellers and farmers to take precautionary measures. It urged all relevant authorities to remain vigilant and implement necessary safety measures during the forecast period.
