  • Interior minister directs authorities to ensure swift arrest of perpetrator
Published Updated

A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) officer was martyred on Sunday in the federal capital while rescuing a woman from an alleged abduction attempt, Aaj News reported quoting police as saying.

Group Captain Asim Tariq was shot dead on the spot near Shaheen Chowk on Ninth Avenue, while the assailant managed to flee the scene, police said.

According to the police, Group Captain Asim was driving past when he noticed a motorcyclist allegedly harassing and trying to force a woman onto his vehicle. Demonstrating immense bravery, the officer pulled over and intervened to protect the woman.

During the scuffle, the woman managed to run to the other side of the officer’s car for safety. The suspect, identified as Saad, engaged in a heated argument with the officer before suddenly opening fire. Group Captain Asim sustained fatal bullet wounds and succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

The police have registered a case, initiated a thorough investigation, and recorded the victim’s statement. In her account, the woman revealed that the suspect is a colleague at her workplace.

She stated that he had offered to drop her off at the office in the morning but diverted the route in an attempt to take her elsewhere against her will. When she resisted and he turned violent, Group Captain Asim arrived at the scene to rescue her.

Law enforcement agencies are currently conducting raids across various areas to apprehend the fleeing suspect. The martyred officer leaves behind a widow, a daughter, and a son. Following the incident, social media has been flooded with tributes hailing the officer’s ultimate sacrifice.

Meanwhile, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed deep sorrow and grief over the martyrdom of Group Captain Asim Tariq.

Extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the minister sought a detailed report on the incident from the inspector general (IG) of Islamabad Police. He directed the authorities to ensure the swift arrest of the perpetrator, promising that no stone would be left unturned in delivering justice to the family of the martyred officer.
