That Karachi is a city of teeming millions is a fact. It’s often described as “mini-Pakistan” for all the right and wrong reasons. The pace of its population growth is much faster than any of country’s big or small city. Being a port city it has also been hosting millions of people who have arrived in Karachi from other parts of Pakistan, particularly southern Punjab.
No doubt they are playing an important role in the economic life of this sprawling city. Unfortunately, however, they’re constituting a burden on the already woefully poor civic structure of the city, including amenities.
The federal government in particular must do something meaningful with regard to these challenges facing the city of the Quaid. It must reach out to provincial governments with a view to creating employment opportunities for the rural people within their respective districts so as to lessen pressure on Karachi’s civic amenities, particularly water supplies.
