KARACHI: The expansive 1100-acre “Awam Dost Cattle Market,” established at Northern Bypass, has officially concluded following a remarkably successful operation.
During the lead-up to Eid-ul-Azha, the venue served as a hub where hundreds of thousands of citizens not only purchased sacrificial animals but also fully engaged in diverse recreational activities. According to the market administration, over 250,000 animals were brought to the market from across the country this year, with a record 99 percent sold, leaving most sectors of the market completely vacated.
Commencing on April 5, this year’s market evolved beyond a traditional trading venue, presenting the atmosphere of a mega family festival. The inclusion of a dedicated food street, play areas for children, family entertainment zones, and comprehensive security and lighting arrangements captivated the public. A large number of citizens completed their Eid shopping while enjoying local delicacies and the refreshing ‘watermelon sherbet’ to combat the summer heat. Sharing her experience of the vibrant atmosphere, young reporter Faiqa Abro, while visiting the media cell alongside her sister, remarked, “This feels more like a family festival than a cattle market; we had a wonderful time here.”
In-charge Administration Aslam Baloch noted that the market is in its final stages, with only around 500 animals—including camels, cows, bulls, and goats—remaining. He confirmed that the KPK, Punjab, Sindh, Sapphire, Golden, Pahari, Karachi, and General blocks have been fully cleared.
Expressing profound satisfaction with the market’s success, Administrator Tariq Tanoli stated, “Our goal was to provide optimal facilities to both traders and citizens, in which, Alhamdulillah, we have succeeded.” He highlighted that the market generated significant employment opportunities for vendors, hotel owners, and cabin operators. He also commended the positive role of electronic, print, social, and global media in effectively showcasing the market’s activities to a worldwide audience.
Meanwhile, traders departing for their hometowns following successful sales appeared highly satisfied, expressing their gratitude to the citizens of Karachi as they headed out. On this occasion, Administrator Tariq Tanoli extended his heartfelt early Eid-ul-Azha greetings to all residents of Karachi.
