The Islamabad talks between the US and Iran have failed. This is the message the both sides have sent to the rest of the world following their 21-hour negotiations in Pakistan’s federal capital that failed to lead to a deal between the two countries. The US President, Donald Trump, has heaped lavish praise on our leaders Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir.
The Iranian side too was equally generous in its praise to Pakistan’s pro-active role in organizing face-to-face talks between the US and the Islamic republic. It is quite clear that Pakistan has done it without taking sides in the larger interest of the world in general and the region in particular.
According to deputy prime minister and foreign minister of Pakistan Ishaq Dar Pakistan has been and will continue to play its role as a mediator “to facilitate engagement and dialogue between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America in the days to come.” That Pakistan deserves praise is a fact that has found its best expression from the European Union’s statement, as its foreign affairs spokesman Anouar El Anouni has said soon after the two sides left for their respective countries, “we salute Pakistan for its mediation efforts.”
