ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday condemned Israel’s ongoing military actions in Lebanon and expressed condolences over what he described as the loss of thousands of lives.

In a telephone call with his Lebanese counterpart Nawaf Salam, Sharif said Pakistan was making “sincere efforts” to promote regional peace, citing planned talks between Iran and the United States.

Salam thanked Sharif for his diplomatic efforts and sought Pakistan’s support in securing an immediate halt to attacks on Lebanon and its people, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office. Both leaders agreed to remain in contact. Separately, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker held a telephone conversation with Sharif, during which the two leaders discussed recent developments.

Sharif recalled his meeting with Stocker during an official visit to Vienna in February and welcomed Austria’s support for Pakistan’s role in facilitating a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, as well as the resumption of negotiations between the two sides.

Both leaders underscored the need for maintaining the ceasefire, saying it could help pave the way for lasting peace and stability in the region.
