Heavy rain batters Karachi as strong westerly wave affects Sindh

Karachi continues to receive intermittent rains after heavy rains, killing four people and injuring at least three others in various accidents. A rain emergency has been declared in the city due to the situation arising after the rains.

The areas that received rain include Korangi, Saddar, North Nazimabad, Gulshan e Meymar, Gulshan e Iqbal, Sharea Faisal, Mauripur, Gulistan e Jauhar, PECHS, Clifton, DHA and II Chundrigar Road.

The Met Office has forecast further rain and thunderstorms for the city, following an initial brief spell that brought a pleasant shift in temperature.

A persistent westerly wave continues to grip the southern regions of the country, triggering a fresh spell of rain, thunderstorms, and isolated hailstorms across several districts in Sindh, including Karachi.

The PMD said the weather system is expected to trigger wind-thunderstorms and rain, with a few moderate to isolated heavy falls, with occasional gaps across Karachi Division and several districts, including Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Tharparkar, Jamshoro, Dadu, Larkana, and Sukkur.

The Met Office further warned of isolated hailstorms in these regions under the influence of the current system.

The rain spell is predicted to persist into tomorrow, primarily affecting upper and central Sindh. Heavy falls and thunderstorms are likely to continue in Larkana, Kashmore, Jacobabad, Sukkur, and Khairpur, while other districts may experience intermittent showers.

The weather advisory department warned that windstorm/ hailstorm and lightning may damage weak structures like electric poles, bill boards and solar panels during the forecast period.

Hailstorm/windstorm may damage standing crops as well, it added, advising farmers to manage their crops according to the prevailing weather conditions.

Due to heavy rain flash flood may generate in local streams/nullahs and urban flooding in low lying areas.

Day time temperatures are likely to decrease during the forecast period, it further stated.
