ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday extended condolences to Iran following the martyrdom of the country’s former supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, while also congratulating the late leader’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, on assuming the nation’s highest religious and political office.
In a formal letter addressed to Mojtaba Khamenei, Prime Minister Sharif conveyed “the condolences and prayers of the Pakistani people” to both the people of Iran and the broader Muslim Ummah.
He described the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei as a moment of deep sorrow, emphasising Pakistan’s solidarity with Iran’s leadership and its citizens during this “difficult time.” The PM also acknowledged the weight of Mojtaba Khamenei’s new responsibilities, expressing hope that under his leadership, Iran would advance towards “peace, stability, dignity, and prosperity in the coming years.” The prime minister highlighted the historic and cultural bonds linking Pakistan and Iran, citing their shared faith, history, culture, and language.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining close co-operation with Iran, emphasising that bilateral collaboration would continue to be pursued “in all areas of mutual interest for the benefit of both brotherly countries.” The letter concluded with personal prayers for the health and success of Mojtaba Khamenei, as well as for continued peace and prosperity for the Iranian people.
