KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi has criticized the federal government over the latest increase in petroleum prices, saying rulers should reduce their own expenditures before burdening the public.
At the “Jeenay Do Karachi” public gathering and Iftar programme held at Hasrat Mohani Park in Rifah-e-Aam Society, Chief of JI Karachi Monem Zafar Khan demanded of the government to follow austerity first.
He also inaugurated a road in the nearby Pure Block area on the occasion. He said the people of Karachi are already deprived of basic necessities, including water, electricity, and gas, adding that more than half the city’s population lacks access to safe drinking water while roads remain broken and sewers continue to overflow.
He said the Sindh government has not allocated a single rupee to town administrations for development projects over the past two and a half years, calling this a failure to provide Karachiites with their basic right to live with dignity. Despite the funding absence, he said, JI representatives have continued to serve residents by lighting streets and reviving playgrounds across neighbourhoods.
Monem Zafar also spoke on the situation in Gaza, saying that Israeli bombardment, backed by American weapons and financial assistance, has killed more than 75,000 Palestinians including children, women, and the elderly, while millions have been injured and around 85 percent of the population displaced.
Also addressing the gathering, member of the Sindh Assembly, Muhammad Farooq said Ramadan is a month of revelation and struggle, drawing a parallel with the Battle of Badr, and called on the Muslim world to show unity against injustice.
