LAHORE: The Pakistan Kissan Rabita Committee (PKRC) has strongly condemned the government’s decision to increase petroleum prices by Rs 55 per litre and demanded its immediate withdrawal.
This drastic decision will impose an unbearable burden on farmers, tenants, and rural workers who are already struggling under severe economic pressures.
The increase comes at a critical time for the agricultural sector. Wheat harvesting is about to begin, while sugarcane and maize cultivation is currently underway. During this period, farmers depend heavily on diesel and petrol to operate harvesters, tractors, and tube wells for irrigation. The sharp rise in fuel prices will significantly increase the cost of cultivation and harvesting, directly affecting small farmers and tenants across the country.
In addition, transportation costs for wheat and other agricultural commodities to major markets will rise substantially. Farmers from Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who must transport their produce over long distances to markets in Punjab and other regions, will be particularly hard hit.
