ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) proposed Rs10 billion for a total of 38 projects, including 19 ongoing and 19 new initiatives under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Science and Technology on Tuesday expressed serious concern over Rs700 million budget cut to the Ministry of Science and Technology, terming the reduction detrimental to research and innovation at a time when the country needs to strengthen its technological base.
The meeting, chaired by Sadiq Iftikhar, was held at the committee room of the Ministry of Science and Technology, where senior officials briefed members on the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) proposals for fiscal year 2026-27.
The committee was informed that the ministry requires over Rs10 billion for a total of 38 PSDP projects, including 19 ongoing and 19 new initiatives. Of the total demand, Rs7.7 billion has been sought for ongoing projects, while Rs2.7 billion is required for new schemes.
Officials said the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) Chip Design Centre project has entered its third year, while the university is also establishing a dedicated Surface Engineering Centre to promote advanced materials research and industrial innovation.
The committee was further briefed that the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) has sought budgetary allocations for three ongoing projects. Under its research support programme, grants are being awarded to address key scientific challenges. The foundation also plans to expand its STEM programme to every district of the country to promote science education at the grassroots level.
Members were informed that the expansion of the Pakistan Museum of Natural History is expected to be completed by June this year.
Federal Secretary for Science and Technology told the committee that the ministry’s development portfolio has suffered Rs700 million cut during the current fiscal year. Chairman of the committee termed the reduction “regrettable,” stating that funds are being slashed where spending is critically needed.
He emphasised that research and development serves as the backbone of national progress and pledged that the committee would collectively raise its voice for enhanced allocations to the science and technology sector in the upcoming budget.
