ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Wednesday strongly criticised the government’s revised solar net metering policy, calling it anti-public, poorly planned, and beneficial to only a few individuals, while warning that such decisions were hurting ordinary consumers and the renewable energy sector.
Addressing a press conference, PPP Central Secretary Information Shazia Marri said that the PPP, despite being part of the government, would not remain silent on policies that go against public interest.
She termed NEPRA’s recent announcement on net metering a “major injustice,” adding that the policy had been introduced without consulting stakeholders, informing the public, or bringing the matter to parliament for debate. Marri said both solar users and businesses linked to green energy were suffering due to the government’s “confusing and reversed policies,” at a time when the world was promoting clean energy.
She accused the government of burdening people with unfair taxes and making life difficult for consumers instead of encouraging renewable power solutions. She further warned that if the government failed to cooperate or review the policy, her party would protest, including staging walkouts in parliament, noting that even members of the ruling PML-N were criticising the decision.
