KARACHI: After the recent tragic incident of a child falling into a manhole at NIPA, Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has issued strict directives to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation to launch an urgent, citywide operation to identify, repair, and secure manholes without delay.

The Mayor emphasized that citizen safety is the top priority and instructed that the initiative cover all towns and localities without exception.

He also urged citizens to identify any open manholes and report them to the Water Board helpline at 1334 or email [email protected].

A meeting was convened at the KMC Head Office, chaired by Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab. The meeting was attended by Syed Mohammad Afzal Zaidi (PAS), Municipal Commissioner KMC; Gulzar Abro Financial Advisor KMC; Senior Director Engineering, Junaid Ullah Khan; and other senior officials.

During the meeting, the Mayor reviewed the status of manholes across the city and expressed serious concern over the risks posed by uncovered or damaged manhole lids.

He stressed the need for a unified and coordinated effort to prevent any such incidents in the future.

The Mayor directed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation to immediately hand over 1,000 manholes to the KMC’s City Warden Department and Engineering Department for rapid repair and installation of secure covers.

He instructed that work should be started without delay, ensuring that all identified manholes are promptly fixed to avert further loss of life.

Barrister Murtaza Wahab reiterated that negligence will not be tolerated and that the concerned departments must complete the task in the shortest possible time.

He also instructed for continuous monitoring to ensure that all manholes across Karachi remain properly covered and safe for the public.

The Mayor concluded by stating that protecting lives is the foremost responsibility of the city administration, and that KMC will take every necessary step to ensure the safety and well-being of Karachi’s residents.
