KARACHI: A major power breakdown at Dhabeji on Sunday once again disrupted Karachi’s water lifeline, shutting four pumps and causing an estimated 100-million-gallon shortfall in the city’s supply.
According to a Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) spokesperson, the latest outage by K Electric struck at 6:35 a.m. in the second phase of the Dhabeji Pumping Station, also damaging a 72-inch diameter main water line. The shutdown forced four pumps offline, cutting a significant portion of the city’s bulk water supply.
Power was restored around 9 a.m., allowing two pumps to resume operations and partially stabilise the distribution system. The remaining two pumps will be reactivated once repairs to the damaged line are completed, officials added.
Acting on the instructions of KW&SC CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, technical teams immediately launched emergency repair work on the affected line. Restoration is expected to be completed by Monday, after which the Dhabeji system is likely to return to full capacity.
The incident is the latest in a series of K-Electric–linked power failures at the pumping station. Earlier breakdowns reported on November 5, 11, and 13 affecting Dhabeji’s Fourth Phase, Second Phase, and K-III pump house also triggered widespread water shortages across Karachi.
