ISLAMABAD: Pakistani-American fashion designer Khadijah Shah on Wednesday decided to relinquish her US citizenship to accept a reserved seat in National Assembly – a position offered to her by Imran Khan for her sacrifices for the party.

Shah, who was accused of rioting and vandalism in May 09, 2023 and subsequently imprisoned under severe conditions, was granted bail in December last year following a court decision.

In a post on Instagram, Shah, who is the daughter of renowned economist Salman, and granddaughter of a former army chief Asif Nawaz Janjua, elaborated on her decision to accept Khan’s offer.

She announced the temporary nomination of Mehrunnisa Sajjad to occupy her parliamentary seat until her citizenship status is resolved.

“Giving up my US citizenship, a symbol of freedom, safety, and opportunity, was a tough decision. But Pakistan is my motherland and where I’ve built my life. I can’t forsake it or my people,” she said, in a post on Instagram.

Reflecting on her recent ordeals, Shah said that “the injustices I’ve faced have reignited my sense of purpose. I aim to contribute positively to Pakistan.”

She expressed her gratitude for Imran Khan’s consideration, and said: “I accepted his offer to represent PTI and hope to meet his expectations and those of my fellow citizens.”

Shah has nominated Mehrunnisa Sajjad, an Oxford University graduate and barrister known for her advocacy work, to temporarily take her place. Shah highlighted Sajjad’s dedication to fighting for marginalised communities and her commitment to true democracy and progress in Pakistan.

“I am proud to nominate such an extraordinary Pakistani woman to represent PTI and myself in parliament. Together, we are committed to making a significant impact,” she added.
