LAHORE: Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider Khan has said that the government was determined to promote investment in the country and provide facilities to the industrial sector; the promotion of industries would create employment opportunities and improve the economy.

He expressed these views during a meeting with Khawaja Jalaluddin Rumi, an industrialist and former president of Multan-Dera Ghazi Khan Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Wednesday. During the meeting, various issues including education and the national economy were discussed.

The Governor averred that economic development in the country is the top priority of the federal and Punjab governments, adding that due to political stability in the country economic indicators, including the stock exchange, are improving.

He further said that as a chancellor, he has taken steps to improve governance in the universities; search committees have been formed for the appointment of permanent Vice-Chancellors in universities.

He expressed the hope that the permanent appointment of Vice-Chancellors and other statutory posts in the universities would improve the quality of research and teaching in the universities.

On this occasion, Khawaja Jalaluddin Rumi congratulated the Governor on assuming the office of Governor of Punjab. He said that industrialists foster employment opportunities for a large population in society.

“The government needs to pay immediate attention to the problems of industrialists. In addition to the reduction in electricity and gas rates there was an urgent need to revise the interest rates,” he added.

Meanwhile, the delegations of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) Sargodha, PPP Students Federation Punjab and PPP Minority Wing met the Governor. During the meeting, PPP Central Punjab General Secretary Hasan Murtaza and Information Secretary Shahzad Saeed Cheema were also present.

Tasneem Qureshi from Sargodha, PSF President Musa Khokhar, and Imran Athwal and Edwin Sohotra from the Minority Wing of the People’s Party led their respective delegations in the meeting.

Speaking on this occasion, the Governor said that he was not only the governor of the People’s Party, but the governor of the entire Punjab. He added that the doors of the Governor’s House were open for the workers and the people of Punjab province alike.

“The People’s Party has always given respect to its workers; I would play a constitutional role in the improvement of Punjab. I should forget the differences and work day and night for the development and stability of the country,” he added.
