ISLAMABAD: The Power Distribution Companies (Discos) and K-Electric have sought positive adjustment of Rs 2.0536 per unit and Rs 1.495 per unit respectively in Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) for May, 2023 under monthly FCA adjustment formula.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) will hold a public hearing on July 5, 2023 to discuss data submitted by the CPPA-G and KE.

According to the data, CPPA-G intends to pass on approximately Rs 24 billion to the consumers while KE has proposed additional financial impact of Rs 2.747 billion in May 2023.

The Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) incurred by utilities is due to global variation in fuel prices used to generate electricity and change in the generation mix. Under the policies governing the power sector, these costs are passed through to the customers for one month only, following Nepra’s scrutiny and approval. Consumers also receive a benefit when the cost of fuel decreases.

The Central Power Purchasing Age-ncy–Guaranteed (CPPA-G) to date reveals that in May 2023, hydel generation was 3,312.20 GWh constituting 26.96 percent of total generation. Power generation from coal-fired power plants was 2,061.30 GWh in May 2023 which was 16.78 percent of total generation at a price of Rs 10.5273 per unit as price of imported coal has decreased internationally.

Generation from HSD was nil whereas generation from RFO was just 240.97 (1.96 percent of total generation) at Rs 23.2416 per unit.

Electricity generation from gas-based power plants was 1,270.90 GWh (10.35 per cent) at Rs 12.4551 per unit. Generation from RLNG was 2,988.05 GWh (24.33 per cent of total generation) at Rs 24.4595 per unit.

Electricity generation from nuclear sources was 1,542.59 GWh at Rs 1.1481 per unit (12.56 percent of total generation), and electricity imported from Iran was 34.54 GWh at Rs 23.5259 per unit.

Power generation from different sources (mixed) was 27.66 GWh at a price of Rs 5.6595 per unit, generation from bagasse recorded at 74.87 GWh, price of which has been calculated at Rs 5.9822 per unit.

The energy generated from wind was recorded at 606.58 GWh, 4.94 percent of total generation and solar at 124.06 GWh, 1.01 percent of total generation in May 2023. The total energy generated was recorded at 12,283.68 GWh, at a basket price of Rs 9.7205 per unit. The total cost of energy was Rs 119.403 billion.

According to the CCPA-G data, net electricity delivered to Discos in May 2023 was 11,954.36 GWh at a rate of Rs 9.8817 per unit, total price of which was Rs 118.129 billion.
