Over a year ago, the Indian government in a controversial move, abrogated Article-370 of the Indian Constitution, stripping Kashmiris of their constitutionally enshrined liberties, and thrusting the region into the brink of direct conflict. Tensions in the region remain high, as small pockets of conflict have escalated across the Jammu & Kashmir region, especially in the midst of a crippling global pandemic.

The multiple arenas of conflict in the region not only include cross-border firing between India and Pakistan, but also the brutal counterinsurgency campaign in the disputed territory by Indian forces - with the increment in operations making it some of the most violent months in the conflict.

In a recent report by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), more than 500 armed clashes and 130 fatalities in cross-border clashes between Indian and Pakistani forces have been reported since the pandemic was declared on the 11th of March.

Furthermore, the report also highlighted that 120 armed clashes and 215 fatalities were reported within the same time frame, due to violent clashes between the Indian military and militant forces (mainly concentrated in Occupied Jammu & Kashmir), with the Indian forces using the coronavirus lockdown to commit resources towards fighting militancy in the region.
