CHICAGO: China booked fresh purchases of US corn and soybeans amid rising concerns that the top buyer of American agricultural goods would slow its import pace after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending preferential economic treatment for Hong Kong.

The US Department of Agriculture on Wednesday said that private exporters reported that China bought 389,000 tonnes of soybeans and 132,000 tonnes of corn for delivery in the 2020/21 marketing year that begins on Sept. 1.

The deals follow a USDA announcement on Tuesday that China bought 1.762 million tonnes of corn, its biggest single-day US corn purchase, and 129,000 tonnes of soybeans.

Trump on Tuesday ordered an end to Hong Kong's special status under US law to punish China for what he called "oppressive actions" against the former British colony, prompting Beijing to warn of retaliatory sanctions.
