Palm oil falls most in nearly two months

Published Updated

Malaysian palm oil futures fell 1.5% on Friday, their most in more than seven weeks, tracking losses in rival oils on the Chicago Board of Trade and the Dalian Commodity Exchange due to profit-booking.

The benchmark palm oil contract on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange closed down 1.5% at 2,568 ringgit ($620.59).

Dalian's January palm oil contract dropped 1.8%, its biggest since Feb. 20, while the soyaoil contract fell 1.5% in its biggest ever slump.

A Kuala Lumpur-based trader said CBOT and Dalian prices fell as funds booked profits from an overdone rally.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for share in the global vegetable oils market.

US soyaoil futures on the CBOT declined 0.3%, on little visible progress toward a Sino-US trade truce.

Compounding losses for the tropical oil on Friday, the ringgit strengthened 0.1% against the dollar and cargo surveyor data showed lacklustre exports for the first half of the month.

A stronger ringgit usually makes the edible oil more expensive for holders of foreign currencies.

Palm oil exports for Nov. 1-15 rose 2.2% from a month earlier, slower than the 19.7% growth seen during the Nov. 1-10 period, and added to the bearish sentiment, another Kuala Lumpur-based trader told Reuters.
