ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has sought the annual financial statements of the previous fiscal year 2025-26 from the lawmakers of all the six legislative houses of the country, latest by the year-end, in accordance with the relevant laws.

In this context, the ECP, on Friday, drew the attention of the members of the two houses of the Parliament, and those of the four provincial assemblies, to submit to the ECP by December 31, 2026, their yearly statements of assets and liabilities, including those of their spouses and dependent children, for the last financial year, which is a mandatory requirement under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017.

This Section reads, “Submission of statement of assets and liabilities - Every member of an assembly and Senate shall submit to the Commission, on or before 31 December each year, a copy of his statement of assets and liabilities including assets and liabilities of his spouse and dependent children as on the preceding thirtieth day of June on Form B.”

In May this year, the ECP fixed a case against nine former lawmakers linked to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), despite already disqualifying them from their respective legislative memberships in consequence of court convictions in 9 May cases, over their failure to submit their wealth statements for the previous financial year, even though the submission of wealth statements is mandatory for sitting legislators.

Reportedly, the nine ex-legislators were summoned for the case hearing, keeping in view that the wealth statements were required from them for the fiscal year 2024-25— the period when they were the lawmakers—before disqualification.

Later, the former lawmakers submitted the required financial statements to the ECP following which the cases against them ended, it is learnt.

Every January 1, the ECP publishes the names of legislators who do not share the required wealth statements, under Section 137(2) of the Elections Act, 2017.

On January 16 each year, the legislative memberships of those lawmakers, who do not submit the required wealth statements for the previous fiscal year to the ECP by January 15, are suspended under Section 137(3).
