ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said Pakistan wanted to strengthen trade and investment ties with Sudan, expressing hope that the conflict-hit African country would overcome its current crisis and emerge as a peaceful, stable and prosperous nation.

He was talking to visiting Sudanese Interior Minister Lt Gen Babiker Samra Mustafa Ali, who called on him here.

The prime minister said Pakistan attached great importance to its longstanding brotherly relations with Sudan and that there were significant opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation in agriculture, defence, education and other sectors.

He also appreciated Sudan’s support for Pakistan at multilateral forums, including the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Group of 77.

The Sudanese minister thanked the prime minister and the Pakistani government for their warm welcome and hospitality. He also appreciated Pakistan’s humanitarian and medical assistance to Sudan amid the ongoing crisis.

He lauded Pakistan’s support for international efforts to restore peace and security in Sudan, as well as its role in promoting regional peace and mediation, according to an official statement.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry and senior officials were also present at the meeting.
