SANAA/DUBAI: Yemen’s Houthis on Tuesday said they targeted the Saudi defence ministry in the capital Riyadh, where authorities earlier said they had intercepted missiles launched by the group.
“Our armed forces targeted the Ministry of Defence in the enemy Saudi capital, Riyadh, with a ballistic missile and the hit was direct,” Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said.
AFP correspondents in Riyadh had heard explosions earlier in the day. Authorities said they intercepted and destroyed two Houthi ballistic missiles launched towards the city.
Earlier during the day, Yemen’s Houthis said they had launched an attack on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura oil refinery, the biggest in the kingdom, located on the Gulf west of the Strait of Hormuz.
The group’s military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a statement that the ballistic missile attack caused a fire at the site.
Houthis have escalated their attacks on Saudi Arabia since September, opening another volatile front in the wider US-Israeli war on Iran.
