China donates veterinary vaccines

Published Updated

ISLAMABAD: China on Wednesday donated veterinary vaccines to Pakistan to strengthen livestock disease control in the country.

The vaccines donated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China to Pakistan include veterinary vaccines against Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) and Brucellamelitensis.

The ceremony of vaccine handover to Pakistan was attended by Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, Shi Yuanqiang, Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, Secretary, Ministry of National Food Security and Research Amir Ali Ahmed, Chairman Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) Dr Syed Murtaza Hassan Andrabi, Chinese Embassy representatives, scientists and livestock-sector experts. The ceremony was held at the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC).

The minister said the donation was a reflection of the time-tested Pakistan-China friendship and growing cooperation in agriculture, livestock, research and science and technology. “The animal diseases, including LSD and Brucella, cause huge economic losses as it badly affects animal health, milk and meat production, reproduction and overall livestock productivity,” he said, adding the donated vaccines would play a key role in supporting the country’s animal health measures.

Hussain said that timely vaccination is one way to protect livestock from LSD and Brucella. Vaccines prevent the spread of diseases and minimize economic loses, he said, adding that LSD reduced milk production in animal, causes weight loss as well as damage hides and skins.

He further said that Brucellamelitensis can cause reproductive disorders, abortions and reduced productivity. “Administration of vaccines protects livestock and enhances livelihoods of farmers,” he said, adding Pakistan was keen to further benefit from China’s experience through enhanced institutional and technical cooperation.

The Minister said the vaccines would be utilised in accordance with applicable technical and regulatory requirements, ensuring quality, proper cold-chain management, appropriate administration and effective monitoring.

“Pakistan highly values its friendship with China and remains committed to deepening our agricultural partnership for the benefit of our farmers, livestock producers and rural communities,” he said.
