ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday demanded a judicial inquiry into a firing incident in Rawalpindi, warning against holding any political party or its workers responsible before an independent investigation establishes the facts.
The demand followed a statement by Rawalpindi police that a man identified as Muhammad Hussain, son of Muhammad Baz, was killed after allegedly opening fire at a security forces’ patrol team on Mall Road in Rawalpindi.
According to a police spokesman, the incident took place at around 11:15am when Hussain allegedly fired a pistol at the patrol team. Police said he was affiliated with a “particular political party”.
The PTI, however, rejected any attempt to draw political conclusions before the investigation was completed.
The party said it was committed to peaceful and constitutional political struggle and rejected violence as a means of pursuing its political objectives.
It called for a “thorough, impartial, transparent, and judicial investigation”, saying responsibility should be determined on the basis of evidence rather than allegations or political considerations.
The PTI also took aim at the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), alleging that it had levelled political accusations within minutes of the incident and attempted to establish a predetermined narrative through a hastily convened press conference.
The party questioned the haste with which political conclusions had been drawn before evidence was collected and the facts established.
It also referred to past episodes of violence associated with the PML-N and mentioned “Gullu Butt”.
The PTI said that if any individual was found to have violated the law, legal action should be taken in accordance with due process.
But it maintained that no political party or its workers should be held responsible before the conclusion of a proper investigation.
It demanded that CCTV footage, other available evidence and the findings of the investigation be made public, besides calling for an impartial judicial inquiry without delay.
