PKR: marginal gain

KARACHI: The Pakistani rupee posted marginal gain against the US dollar for another week as it appreciated by 0.03 percent in the inter-bank market.

The local unit closed at 277.71, a gain of Re0.09 against 277.80 it had closed at against the greenback a week earlier, according to State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) data.

Pakistan’s headline inflation clocked in at 9.2 percent on a year-on-year (YoY) basis in July 2026. Meanwhile, the country’s trade deficit jumped over 25 percent to USD 3.95 billion in July 2026 compared to July 2025, with import payments surging almost 18 percent on YoY basis and export earnings improving nearly 10 percent, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics reported.

Foreign exchange reserves held by the SBP increased by USD 13 million to USD 17.04 billion during the week ended July 31, 2026. The country’s total liquid foreign exchange reserves stood at USD 22.47 billion. Of these, commercial banks held USD 5.43 billion.

Open-market rates

In the open market, the PKR gained 22 paise for buying and lost 2 paise for selling against USD, closing at 278.71 and 279.87, respectively.

Against Euro, the PKR gained 1.53 rupee for buying and 1.51 rupee for selling, closing at 320.10 and 323.32, respectively.

Against UAE Dirham, the PKR gained 47 paise for buying and 44 paise for selling, closing at 75.80 and 76.47, respectively.

Against Saudi Riyal, the PKR gained 45 paise for buying and 50 paise for selling, closing at 74.11 and 74.68, respectively.
