ISLAMABAD: The United States has called for increased cooperation with Pakistan in agricultural technology, highlighting opportunities for American companies to invest in areas ranging from precision farming to irrigation systems and food processing.

US Chargé d’ Affaires Natalie Baker made the remarks during a direct line webinar with US businesses, investors, Pakistani government officials and agricultural producers.

The session, organised by the Business Council for International Understanding in collaboration with the US Embassy in Islamabad, the US Department of Commerce and the Government of Pakistan, focused on expanding commercial ties and promoting the use of modern agricultural technologies in Pakistan.

Baker said agriculture remained central to Pakistan’s economy, accounting for nearly a quarter of gross domestic product and supporting millions of livelihoods.

She said greater access to US expertise and technology could help Pakistan address challenges in the sector while creating new business opportunities for both countries.

“American companies are well positioned to bring their expertise, technologies and decades of practical experience to the table,” she said, according to a statement issued by the embassy after the webinar.

She pointed to technologies such as precision agriculture machinery, advanced irrigation systems, digital farm management tools and cold-chain logistics as areas where US firms could contribute to improving productivity and resource management.

The US Mission said bilateral trade in agricultural and related goods had remained significant, with US exports to Pakistan exceeding USD1.5 billion in 2025.

Pakistani participants highlighted policy and regulatory measures aimed at facilitating imports of US agricultural products, including soybeans, cotton and planting seeds.

They also encouraged investment in farm mechanisation, controlled-atmosphere storage, food processing, seed development and biotechnology.

Baker said US companies entering new markets brought not only products but also technical knowledge, training and long-term partnerships.

The webinar also highlighted a planned US Department of Commerce Certified Agricultural Technologies Trade Mission to Pakistan, scheduled for Oct 26-30, 2026, and led by the BCIU.

“Supporting American companies as they explore opportunities in Pakistan’s agricultural sector is a core priority,” Baker said.

The event was attended by representatives of the federal government, provincial authorities in Punjab and Sindh, the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), the Green Corporate Initiative and US businesses.
