Pakistan, Denmark launch strategic energy cooperation to accelerate green transition

Pakistan and Denmark launched a Strategic Sector Cooperation Programme to accelerate Pakistan's green energy transition and climate mitigation through technical assistance and capacity building in key energy areas.

Pakistan and Denmark on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to formally launch the Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) Programme, aimed at accelerating Pakistan’s green energy transition and climate mitigation efforts.
The MoU was signed by Power Division Secretary Dr Fakhre Alam Irfan on behalf of Pakistan and Danish Ambassador to Pakistan Maja Derrous Mortensen on behalf of Denmark. Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division) Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari witnessed the signing ceremony, the ministry said in a statement.
The government-to-government partnership will provide technical assistance from Danish experts to Pakistan’s federal energy authorities, focusing on low-carbon pathways and cost-effective implementation of the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets.
Under the programme, technical assistance and institutional capacity building will focus on three areas: long-term energy planning, renewable energy integration and industrial energy efficiency.
The initiative will support key energy-sector institutions, including the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO), National Grid Company (NGC), National Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority (NEECA), National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), Power Planning and Monitoring Company (PPMC) and Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB).
The SSC programme is being implemented jointly by the Danish Energy Agency, the Embassy of Denmark in Islamabad and Pakistan’s Power Division.
The new cooperation builds on the Danish Energy Transition Initiative (DETI), which provided technical assistance and capacity development to Pakistani energy authorities from 2021 to 2025.
Under DETI, Pakistani technical and professional experts participated in two specialised study tours to Denmark, while GreenTech events were held in Karachi and Lahore to promote knowledge sharing and sustainable energy technologies.
