KARACHI: The Sindh government has approved a series of measures to expand and modernise public transport, including the launch of an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service next month, the induction of 50 double-decker buses in Karachi after two months, and the phased addition of 1,000 electric buses by the end of this year.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, on Tuesday.

During the meeting, officials reviewed progress on the ongoing transport projects and approved the launch of new People’s Bus Service routes connecting Larkana with Qambar and Qambar with Shahdadkot.

The meeting also decided to open a section of the mixed-traffic lane on Karachi’s University Road to motorists in September to help ease traffic congestion during construction work.

Sharjeel Inam Memon directed the officials to complete the depots for the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project within the prescribed timeline and expedite the launch of the new intercity People’s Bus Service routes.

He said the EV taxi service would become operational in September 2026, while 50 new double-decker buses were expected to arrive in Karachi in October 2026.

Another 1,000 electric buses would be added to the province’s public transport fleet in phases from the end of 2026, he said.

The minister said the provincial government remained committed to expanding safe, environmentally friendly and reliable public transport, describing the initiatives as part of broader efforts to improve urban mobility and encourage the use of sustainable transport across Sindh.
