KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sindh chapter president Nisar Ahmad Khuhro on Saturday rejected calls for the creation of a new province in Sindh and described such proposals as unconstitutional.
Speaking at a news conference here, Khuhro said Pakistan’s Constitution clearly prescribes the procedure for creating a new province, requiring the approval of a resolution by a two-thirds majority in the concerned provincial assembly. “If a new province is to be created under the Constitution, the process must be followed.”
The Punjab Assembly had previously adopted a resolution supporting the creation of a new province, while there was no such demand with constitutional backing in Sindh, he argued.
He criticised recent remarks by the Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi regarding the country’s political system. Any suggestion that the democratic system had failed was contrary to the spirit of the Constitution, he opined. He argued that a federal minister who publicly questions the democratic framework should step down from office.
He said Pakistan could not afford any unconstitutional course, adding that democratic continuity and constitutional supremacy were essential for addressing the country’s political and economic challenges.
Khuhro also criticised proposals to create multiple new provinces, arguing that such measures would increase administrative expenditure at a time when the country was facing economic constraints.
Responding to a question, he said the issue of the Jalalpur Canal remained pending before the Council of Common Interests (CCI) and should be taken up when the constitutional forum meets.
On this occasion, a Karachi-based businessman Saeed S Muhammad announced joining the PPP, expressing confidence in the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Khuhro welcomed him into the party.
