Aligning with Pakistan’s energy transition: partnerships, innovation and grid modernization

Pakistan’s energy sector is at a pivotal stage of its development. As the country seeks to strengthen energy security, improve grid reliability, support industrial growth, and increase the share of clean energy in the national mix, investment in modern transmission infrastructure has become just as important as investment in new generation capacity.

A resilient and efficient grid is essential to delivering affordable, reliable electricity to communities and businesses while supporting the country’s long-term economic ambitions.

As a global technology leader advancing a sustainable energy future for all, Hitachi Energy has been supporting Pakistan’s energy transition through partnerships, innovation, and technologies designed to improve the performance and sustainability of power systems. The company’s approach aligns closely with Pakistan’s national energy objectives, particularly the need to enhance transmission capacity, strengthen network stability, and enable greater integration of renewable energy resources.

Collaboration has been central to this journey. Over the years, Hitachi Energy has worked with key stakeholders including the National Grid Company (NGC), the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), and K-Electric to support the modernization of Pakistan’s electricity infrastructure. These partnerships demonstrate a shared commitment to building a stronger and more flexible grid capable of meeting rapidly growing electricity demand while supporting the country’s sustainability goals.

One notable example is the company’s contribution to WAPDA’s Dasu Hydropower Project. Through the deployment of advanced 800 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and Gas Insulated Line (GIL) technology, the project will help harness Pakistan’s significant hydropower potential and deliver clean, reliable electricity to the national grid. As one of the country’s flagship renewable energy initiatives, Dasu is expected to contribute meaningfully to energy security and long-term economic development.

More recently, Hitachi Energy was selected for the 765/220 kV Mansehra Grid Station project, a strategic milestone in the evolution of Pakistan’s transmission network. The project will introduce advanced high-voltage technologies that support efficient long-distance power transfer, increase network reliability, and create additional capacity for future renewable energy integration. As Pakistan continues to modernize its grid, infrastructure of this nature will play an increasingly important role in enabling a more resilient and future-ready power system.

The company’s digital expertise has also contributed to Pakistan’s energy landscape through its involvement in the NGC SCADA III project. Enhanced monitoring, control, and operational visibility enables utilities to manage assets more efficiently, improve system performance, and respond more effectively to changing network conditions.

Beyond individual projects, Hitachi Energy’s broader contribution lies in helping utilities and industries accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable, reliable, and flexible energy future. Through continued collaboration with partners such as NGC and WAPDA, and through the deployment of advanced transmission and digital technologies, Pakistan is laying the foundations for an energy system that can support growth, sustainability, and prosperity for decades to come.
