Keeping Pakistan’s engines running: a Swiss partner in power

  • Syed Muhammad Faisal, Country Managing Director Accelleron Pakistan
Published Updated

Accelleron is a Swiss company building on a heritage of over 100 years. Since spinning off from ABB in 2022, we have transformed from an ABB division into a lean, focused standalone company.

We leveraged a century of turbocharging expertise but built our own independent operations and brand from scratch, becoming a globally recognized specialist in heavy-duty turbocharging, fuel injection, and digital solutions.

Today, we are positioned as a technology leader helping marine and energy customers go further with more power, efficiency, and reliability for their engines. With more than 3,200 employees, Accelleron is not only the world’s leading turbocharger provider for large diesel and gas engines, but a broad-based technology partner – combining hardware, digital tech, and services.

Heavy investments in R&D

We have heavily invested in R&D – about 6% of our group revenue annually – to advance turbocharger technology since becoming independent.

Our R&D has also delivered tangible improvements to our existing turbo lines. For example, our engineering teams have focused on making turbochargers more compact and efficient. Traditionally, bigger turbochargers meant better efficiency; we challenged that with designs that maintain performance while reducing size.

Additionally, we have introduced design tweaks like optimized compressor aerodynamics and high-performance coatings on components, which can be retrofitted to older units to immediately raise pressure ratios and lower fuel consumption.

Energy focus in Pakistan

Globally, Accelleron generates more than 50% of its revenues in marine and more than 40% in energy. In Pakistan, with locations in Lahore (head office) and Karachi, our business focus is on power generation, providing solutions to textile manufacturing companies, independent power plants and oil and gas companies. Locally, we employ 18 people, giving customers direct access to our know-how on the ground.

Energy resilience – alongside decarbonization and digitalization – has emerged as a structural force shaping our core markets. Global energy demand continues to rise while grids in many regions simultaneously reach their capacity limits, particularly in countries with weak or aging infrastructure.

Modern power plants and generator systems built around turbocharged internal combustion engines provide three mission critical functions: continuous baseload power in off grid regions (prime power), grid balancing capacity to support renewable energy (balancing power), and emergency power for critical infrastructure (backup power).

We supply high performance turbochargers (medium and high speed) and fuel injectors for internal combustion engines deployed worldwide in critical energy applications – from decentralized power plants and biogas facilities to emergency generators for data centers, nuclear power plants, and hospitals.

Excellent turbocharger service keeps engines running

Our top priority is keeping customers’ engines running reliably. We operate more than 100 service stations in over 50 countries, continually adjusting this network to where and when customers need support. Fast, local response for scheduled maintenance and unexpected repairs is paramount – customers can’t afford downtime, so we have built a global, 24/7 service footprint with a highly efficient global service center in Switzerland to minimize any engine outages.

Our service training program begins in Switzerland, from where all authorized service engineers are trained. Located in the same facility where our products are designed and made, the service training center in Switzerland has become a crucial connection between product development and real-world use of those products. Service engineers that return to Switzerland for training not only take crucial, current knowledge back to their global locations; they also feed back to headquarters from discussions with operators in the field, allowing us to continuously hone our product offer based on deep in-service insights.

Our service engineers are not simply onboarded once and dispatched. They cycle back through Switzerland, or through our other practical training facilities, roughly every three years for refresher work. Each year, we train around 350 service engineers.

Service is as much about people as about technology. Our highly skilled service engineers – more than 500 globally – are trained to be solutions-oriented. Operators today expect a partner who takes ownership of their problems and solves them proactively. They also expect the same high service quality everywhere, including in Pakistan, where 10 trained service engineers provide local support.
