ISLAMABAD: Seven more people died in Punjab and three in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) during the past 24 hours as monsoon rains continued to batter parts of the country, pushing the nationwide death toll since June 26 to 107, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Sunday.
According to the NDMA’s daily situation report, covering the 24-hour period ending at 1pm, Punjab recorded seven fatalities. Gujrat and Okara reported two deaths each, while one death each was recorded in Sargodha, Narowal and Sialkot.
In KP, two people died in Hangu and one in Shangla. The authority said the deaths were caused by house collapses, electrocution and drowning.
The latest spell of rain also left 50 people injured, including 47 in various districts of Punjab and three in Hangu.
According to the NDMA, KP has recorded the highest number of fatalities since the onset of the monsoon on June 26, with 55 deaths. Punjab has reported 36 deaths, followed by seven in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), six in Balochistan, two in Sindh and one in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).
The authority has repeatedly urged provincial administrations and residents in vulnerable areas to take precautionary measures as the monsoon season continues.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast another spell of rainfall from July 29, particularly over the upper catchments of major rivers, Islamabad, upper Punjab, AJK, KP and Gilgit-Baltistan.
In its advisory, the Met Office said no flood-generating rainfall was expected until July 28, but warned that fresh rain could increase water flows in upper catchment areas from Tuesday onwards.
For the 24-hour period ending around Monday noon, the PMD predicted scattered rain accompanied by wind and thunderstorms over the upper catchments of all major rivers, as well as Islamabad, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Rain and thundershowers are also expected in several districts of KP, including Abbottabad, Batagram, Buner, Chitral, Haripur, Kohat, Kohistan, Mansehra, Mardan, Nowshera, Shangla, Swabi, Swat, Tor Ghar and Upper and Lower Dir.
In Punjab, rain is forecast for Attock, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Chakwal, Chiniot, Dera Ghazi Khan, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Jhang, Jhelum, Kasur, Khanewal, Khushab, Lahore, Lodhran, Mandi Bahauddin, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Nankana Sahib, Narowal, Okara, Pakpattan, Rawalpindi, Sahiwal, Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Toba Tek Singh and Vehari.
The Met Office also forecast rain in parts of Sindh, including Badin, Hyderabad, Matiari, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Tando Allahyar, Tando Mohammad Khan, Tharparkar and Umerkot, while showers are expected in Balochistan’s Barkhan, Duki, Kalat, Khuzdar, Kohlu, Loralai and Musakhel districts.
For Karachi, the PMD predicted cloudy and humid conditions with light rain or drizzle and a chance of thunderstorms on the outskirts of the city on Sunday. Similar weather, with cloudy skies and isolated drizzle, is expected to persist on Monday and Tuesday.
