Starmer’s misstep

Published Updated

The controversy that had surrounded the appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK’s ambassador to the United States culminated in the resignation of Keir Starmer as the prime minister of Britain. It had been hardly thinkable that Starmer would bow out of 10 Downing Street midway through considering the majority that the Labour Party under the leadership of Starmer had secured in the last elections in Britain.

He had appeared larger than life. But one wrong step finished Starmer’s career as the leading stalwart of the party.

One wonders to what extent Starmer’s blunder damage the party and what would the prospects of the party be in the next general elections in Britain. Will the squabble within the Labour Party cast its shadows over the next general elections in Britain. One has to wait and see. That Andy Burnham would become the next prime minister of Britain after the resignation of Keir Starmer was a foregone conclusion.

Burnham secured an overwhelming number of votes from his party colleagues to become the Labour Party leader and subsequently the Prime Minister of Britain.

Burnham campaigned on themes including: reconnecting Labour with working-class voters; initiating a ‘circuit breaker’ economic policy, decentralising government; addressing the cost-of-living crisis; and presenting a less confrontational style of leadership.
