Violations of QoS: PTA imposes Rs3.41bn penalties on CMOs

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has imposed cumulative financial penalties of Rs3.41 billion on Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) over the last four years for violations related to Quality of Service (QoS) and coverage obligations, according to official documents.

The documents reveal that the regulator initiated a broad enforcement drive, issuing 20 warning letters, 86 Show-Cause Notices (SCNs) and imposing Rs3.41 billion in financial penalties against mobile operators for persistent regulatory non-compliance.

PTA said operators found with QoS or coverage deficiencies are required to submit a Root Cause Analysis (RCA), a time-bound corrective action plan, and a compliance report within 30 days. The regulator added that compliance is verified through follow-up surveys, while operators failing to address deficiencies face escalating enforcement action, including financial penalties.

Officials said PTA has intensified a crackdown on telecom operators as it wants mobile operators to improve network quality and ensure compliance with licence obligations across the country.
