ISLAMABAD: The opposition alliance-building drive gained momentum on Wednesday as PTI and Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) hinted at launching a coordinated assault against the government, accusing it of failing to contain the deepening security crisis in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In a politically charged telephone conversation, former National Assembly speaker and senior PTI leader Asad Qaiser and BNP central senior vice president Advocate Sajid Tareen discussed a broader opposition strategy aimed at challenging what they described as a government lacking public legitimacy.
According to a statement issued after the call, the two leaders reviewed the country’s escalating political tensions, governance failures and issues confronting ordinary citizens.
They agreed that fragmented opposition voices must be merged into a coordinated resistance movement to confront the government.
Taking a direct swipe at the ruling setup, both leaders referred to the current administration as “fake” and argued that a united opposition front was necessary to defend what they called the people’s mandate.
The talks signal growing attempts among opposition parties to move beyond individual protests and create a collective platform capable of mounting sustained political pressure.
The leaders said efforts would soon begin to bring “genuine opposition parties” together under one banner for a coordinated campaign.
Qaiser also praised BNP-M chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal and his party for resisting what he termed political pressure and repression, portraying the BNP-M as a force that had maintained its stance on public rights despite challenges.
“The BNP has maintained a consistent line of principled politics,” Qaiser said, according to the statement, praising the party for persistently raising Balochistan’s unresolved political, security and social issues despite mounting pressures.
Tareen echoed the call for opposition unity, saying political parties would need to set aside differences and collectively defend the interests of the people.
The latest contact comes as opposition groups attempt to consolidate their positions amid mounting criticism over security challenges, particularly in Balochistan and KP, where militant violence and governance concerns continue to fuel public anger.
With PTI’s nationwide political influence and BNP’s foothold in Balochistan, a coordinated alliance could add a new layer of pressure on the government already facing criticism over legitimacy, security and political management.
