PM speaks to Pezeshkian, reaffirms Islamabad’s role as mediator

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday called on Iran and all other parties involved in the latest regional tensions to exercise restraint, warning that renewed confrontation could undermine the fragile progress made towards peace in recent months.

During a telephone conversation with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian, the PM expressed Pakistan’s deep concern over the worsening security situation and stressed the urgent need to restore peace, stability, and dialogue across the region.

The prime minister urged all sides to avoid actions that could further escalate tensions, emphasising that lasting peace required responsibility, patience, and adherence to previously agreed commitments.

He highlighted the need for honouring the mutual obligations and responsibilities outlined in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), describing the agreement as a foundation for strengthening trust, promoting regional cooperation, and advancing shared prosperity.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to regional peace, the prime minister assured President Pezeshkian that Islamabad would continue to extend all possible support and play a sincere and constructive role in efforts to restore and maintain stability.

President Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to peace and stability in the region and appreciated Pakistan’s support and constructive diplomatic role in this regard.

The two leaders also reviewed progress on decisions agreed upon during President Pezeshkian’s visit to Islamabad last month and agreed to expedite their implementation in order to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Prime Minister Sharif conveyed his best wishes and warm sentiments for Ayatollah Syed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei during the conversation.

President Pezeshkian also expressed appreciation for the participation of Prime Minister Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and other senior Pakistani leaders in the funeral prayers and burial ceremonies of the late Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei.

Both leaders agreed to maintain regular contact and continue close consultations on matters of mutual interest, particularly regional peace, security, and bilateral relations.

The diplomatic engagement came as tensions in the region continued to rise following a series of confrontations that began earlier this week.

The escalation reportedly followed at least three suspected Iranian attacks on commercial vessels operating outside routes designated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
