KARACHI: Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi on Tuesday said that a strong parliament was the cornerstone of democracy, constitutional supremacy and public confidence, and urged political stakeholders to promote dialogue, consensus and effective legislation to address the key challenges confronting the country.

In a message on the World Parliament Day, the Governor said that democratic institutions could only be strengthened through adherence to the Constitution, respect for parliamentary traditions and a collective commitment to national interests.

“A strong parliament is the foundation of democracy, the rule of the Constitution and the trust of the people,” Hashmi said, adding that the country’s progress depended on an effective and representative parliamentary system efficient to match the aspirations of citizens.

He stressed that dialogue, consensus-building and meaningful legislation were the need of the hour to resolve national issues, asserting that constructive engagement among political forces was essential for political stability, institutional continuity and sustainable development.

He also underscored the importance of broader participation in the democratic process. That, greater parliamentary representation of young people and women would further strengthen democratic governance and make legislative institutions more inclusive and responsive.

Hashmi said that safeguarding the Constitution and reinforcing democratic institutions were essential for ensuring a stable, prosperous and secure future for Pakistan.

The World Parliament Day provided an opportunity to renew the nation’s commitment to democratic values, constitutional governance and the primacy of the national interest, while reaffirming the importance of parliament as the central forum for legislation, accountability and public representation.

The Governor called upon all segments of society and political leadership to work collectively for the strengthening of democratic institutions and the promotion of constitutional norms in the larger interest of the country.
