Venezuela tremors affecting region: Balochistan hit by five quakes in just 24 hours

QUETTA: Balochistan has witnessed a back-to-back mild to strong five earthquakes in just 24-hours, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed on Saturday.

According to PMD chief meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are located on the Eurasian tectonic plate.

He said the recent earthquakes are occurring on the upper surface of this tectonic plate and are linked to global seismic activity.

The chief meteorologist explained that energy waves generated after the recent earthquake in Venezuela are affecting connected tectonic plates and contributing to tremors in the region.

He further noted that after major earthquakes in Indonesia between 2000 and 2011, the devastating 2005 Kashmir earthquake followed in Kashmir.

Amir Haider Laghari warned that more tremors may occur until the energy waves within the earth dissipate, adding that scientifically predicting the exact timing and final intensity of an earthquake remains impossible.

On Saturday, a moderate 5.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Balochistan and nearby regions, according to Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said.

The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) said a 5.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded, with the epicentre located about 58 kilometres northeast of Barkhan, local media channels reported.

PDMA said tremors were felt on Saturday morning in Musakhel, Barkhan, Rakhni and Kohlu, with reports of minor injuries and damage to houses in several areas of Musakhel.

People came out of their homes in panic and rushed towards open areas for safety after strong tremors were felt across the affected regions.

The PDMA further stated that minor injuries were reported from Kangari, Rarasham and Kajhori, adding that relief and rescue teams have been dispatched to the affected regions to carry out emergency operations.-Agencies
